Tankstellen bleiben geschlossen, in Supermarktregalen herrscht gähnende Leere.

Alles anzeigenEmpty shelves spotted in Salisbury supermarkets amid UK shortages
Some Journal readers have reported noticeable gaps on shelves and freezers in Tesco, Sainsbury's and Waitrose.
This comes as shoppers up and down the UK have been left frustrated at a shortage of food, with blame being placed on the 'pingdemic', worker shortages and Brexit.
Supermarket chains have reportedly removed entire aisles to hide shortages.

The Guardian view on empty shelves: a crisis made in government
Most of the system that puts food on the 21st-century table is a mystery to the consumer, who is usually happy in ignorance. If the complex logistics – picking, processing, packing, and distributing – make headlines it is because something has gone wrong.
Currently, two very big things have gone wrong, leading to gaps on supermarket shelves. One is the pandemic, which has slowed the movement of goods and people across borders, while raising shipping costs. Any broken link in global supply chains causes a cascade of disruption which affects many countries. But Britain has a second, aggravating condition to contend with – Brexit.
Being outside the EU single market and customs union imposes bureaucracy and friction at borders that British businesses did not previously face. Ending freedom of movement for EU nationals has drained the labour pool from which many industries recruited. Without agricultural workers, food rots before it can get to market. Without hauliers, goods sit unshipped in depots.

GAPS have started to appear on supermarket shelves in Worcester as the shops begin to feel the effects of a driver shortage.
The shortage is being put down to drivers being 'pinged' by the NHS Track and Trace app and having to self isolate as well as Brexit issues.
Worcester News sent a reporter to five big supermarkets in the city including Tesco, Sainsbury's and ASDA.
And while there is definitely no need to panic buy, there are definite signs of supply issues.

Food shortages worst I have seen, says supermarket chief
Grocery shoppers face less choice as the boss of one of Britain’s biggest supermarket chains said food shortages were the worst he has known.
Steve Murrells, chief executive of the Co-operative Group, said it was reducing some ranges as the industry’s ability to get food to shops was hit by post-Brexit migration rules and Covid-19.
“The shortages are at a worse level than at any time I have seen,” he said.
Shops and fast-food restaurants are struggling for stock amid labour shortages, with a lack of fruit pickers and meat processors as well as HGV drivers and other roles. Subway and McDonald’s have become the latest victims of a lorry driver shortage. McDonald’s removed milkshakes from its menu at 1,250 outlets in England, Scotland

Inside the UK food shortages: Why Nando’s and Sainsbury’s are running out
Beyond Brexit and the 'pingdemic' there are some more deep-seated reasons behind UK food shortages emptying restaurants and supermarkets
Very little can get between Britain and its Nando’s. The chain of chicken restaurants has reached meme levels of cultural permeation, become the subject of political photo ops, the merits of its spicy sauces debated as fiercely as the correct way to make a proper cup of tea or Britain’s place in Europe. And now the chicken has run out.
Images of missing stock in UK supermarkets began to emerge from June 2021 onwards. Rows and rows of bare shelves. Fridges left unfilled. Bemused shoppers, standing questioning with empty baskets. Slowly but steadily the frustrated muttering around UK food shortages made its way on to social media feeds and into national newspapers, as warnings of a “summer of disruption” to the UK’s supply chain became reality.
BP was forced to close petrol stations because it didn’t have enough fuel to sell. Pubs were left unable to source beer. Iceland, faced with losing 1,000 staff to self-isolation, warned it may need to temporarily shut some of its stores. The British Meat Processors Association went even further, warning that the UK’s food supply chain was “right on the edge of failing”. Fifty Nando’s restaurants have been forced to close due to chicken shortages. The official Nando’s Twitter account has been apologising to customers by saying the UK supply chain is “having a bit of a ‘mare“.
What’s behind the latest food shortages?

BREXIT
- UK food security is in question as supply chain issues leave shelves empty. Can indies fill the gap?
The food sector continues to face staffing shortages as the dual impacts of Brexit and Covid-19 cause disruption across the industry. Retailers, producers and restaurants are all being hit by the shortages, which are the result of Covid-related absences as well as European Union workers leaving the country due to Brexit. While these effects threaten businesses both large and small, local shops with smaller supply chains may be in a stronger position to keep their shelves stocked.
UK Food Shortages: Is Covid Or Brexit To Blame?
The issue appears to be escalating following shortages in both McDonald's and Nando's.
Fears that Britain is on the cusp of a food shortage have alarmed some people recently.
For every tweet claiming supermarket shelves are empty, there’s another claiming there are no shortages. And, somehow, it has descended into yet another row about Brexit, leaving everyone confused.
So, here’s what we know.
