Texas starts blackouts as frigid weather sends power prices surging
The Texas grid operator began rolling blackouts early on Monday as arctic air enveloped the central US and sparked record demand for power.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas told consumers that the need to conserve electricity had become “critical” after earlier asking homes and businesses to reduce demand “as much as possible” until Tuesday as it coped with frigid conditions that drained electricity supplies.
At 1:25am local time it announced it would begin “rotating outages” to “reduce demand on the electric system”. It added: “Traffic lights and other infrastructure may be temporarily without power.”

Nearly 2.4 million customers had no electricity as of 6:30 a.m. CST, according to poweroutage.us.
"Every grid operator and every electric company is fighting to restore power right now," said Bill Magness, president and CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.
The council described the rotating outages as a "last resort to preserve the reliability of the electric system as a whole."

Texas' power grid experienced a systemwide failure Monday morning as demand surged due to the historic winter conditions across the state.
Grid managers declared an emergency after the record-breaking energy use strained utilities beyond capacity.
Outages across Texas could last for hours due to multiple power generation plants that are offline, according to officials. An estimated 75% of Texas power generation capacity is impacted.
The failures could last into at least Tuesday as crews work to bring plants back online.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) declared an "energy emergency alert three" also called an EEA 3 early Monday, as the third of three alert phases. In the first phase, the state looks to get electricity from other grids. The second stage shuts down large industrial users who've agreed to cut power in an emergency. The third phase is rotating outages.
